Why don’t no frills airlines offer more cheap flights to Greece?

I was asked on twitter by @Korb0s why there aren’t any Ryanair flights to Greece. The question could of course be extended to why there aren’t more cheap flights to Greece from all of the budget airlines, with Easyjet and Jet2 perhaps being the main exceptions. I narrowed down the 140 characted twitter answer to two words (airport monopoly), and said I’d give a bit more explanation later. So here are the key reasons:

  1. Airports monopoly. Greek airports operate on a monopoly basis, and to paraphrase Ryanair’s route development manager, ‘they wouldn’t know a commercial deal if it came up to them and slapped them in the face’. One of Ryanair’s biggest driving factors in developing new routes is the ability to secure the best possible deals out of the airports it wants to fly to. This can make or break a route decision just as much as whether or not they actually forecast demand to be there. If they get their sums wrong about demand, they can quickly drop the route, if they can’t screw a good deal out of the airports, they are stuck with paying high handling fees forever - that is the crux of the matter.
  2. Seasonality - no-frills airlines prefer to operate routes which have demand throughout the year. The market for flights to Greece has traditionally been dominated by charter companies, who offer packages during the summer season. Greece is not typically seen as a winter sun destination, and unlike destinations like Barcelona (Girona) or Granada, there aren’t any Greek airports which are close to ski resorts.
  3. Dispersal - when no-frills airlines have competed well against charter operators, they have opened up routes where they can put on a reasonable frequency of flights, and where a good range of resorts can be accessed from the destination airports. Apart from the capital Athens, Greek destinations are scattered around a plethora of islands, making no-frills flight routes to any one island less likely to be viable.
  4. Distance - a flight from London to Alicante is 914 miles, whereas a flight to Athens is 1,485 miles. This extra flying distance doesn’t just burn up a lot more fuel, it also means more crewing time, and more usage of the aircraft. For example, Easyjet’s 6:20 flight from Gatwick to Athens doesn’t arrive back into Gatwick until 14:20 - effectively half the day gone to service just one route. Sure, passengers have a higher perception of value for the longer routes, but it is still easier to juggle slots around two shorter routes than one longer one. At a regional level, Flybe have opened up a number of routes into various regional airports in France, but Greece would simply be out of the range of the Bombardier Q400 aircraft that they use on these routes - although flights to Athens from Birmingham using their Embraer 195 jets would seem to make reasonable sense.
  5. Ancilliary revenue - this is just a theory, but I would guess that as many Greek island destinations are fairly small, a large proportion of passengers use transfer buses to get to and from the resorts they are staying at. There is less benefit from having a hire car, and people who do might be more likely to rent a car just for the day. If this is the case, it means less chance of earning extra money for the airlines - but they should at least sell a few more sandwiches onboard their flights.

As always, this is just my tuppence, but I hope it gives a few insights into why there aren’t more flights to Greece from the UK. James

Blogger changes airlines cycle carriage policy

As a keen cyclist and travel website owner (turning into frequent blogger card holder too), I was interested to read this CNN article suggested to me by Travelrants (via Twitter) about how customer Carl Larson blogged on the Bike Transportation Alliance website about being charged $50 to carry his foldable bike on the U.S. carrier Jet Blue, and then managed to get them to change their policy and refund his money after his blog post was picked up by another cycling blog - bikeportland. His post then made its way to a site called The Consumerist, which incidentally I was on earlier on today when I was looking up the Times article about reasons not to fly Ryanair (in order to reply with 20 reasons why you should fly with Ryanair.

Now speaking of airlines and blogging, we know that Ryanair have made an outburst about ‘lunatic bloggers‘, but Ryanair have always thrived on being antagonistic towards anyone who can get them a headline or two, so their strategy is going to buck the trend a little. Jetblue seem to have a commercial model which is much more similar to Easyjet, so it will be interesting to see how stories evolve about The Big Orange and other low cost carriers responding to blogs.

Meanwhile, I think that my own two nightmares with carrying bikes on plans pre-dated the social media revolution. My first was on a Thomsonfly flight to Malaga from Coventry in February 2006, where the wheel got dented, I think because it was put on the standard luggage reclaim belt at Malaga airport. It wouldn’t have been worth pursuing the airline for the cost of one wheel, and fortunately my hotel was just 100 yards from a bike shop so I was able to get going again fairly quickly.

After that experience, I got a hard case for bike the next time for a flight to Geneva with Easyjet in Otctober 2006. On the return journey from Basel, the case itself was damaged. What looked like just a missing wheel turned out to be a crack in the outer casing, writing off the whole box. It took 6 weeks for Easyjet to admit liability, and even when they did, they only repeated the phrase (still, I believe used today), that “bikes and aircraft don’t mix”. I knew they wouldn’t cover the bike, and had separate cover for that, and thought things would be sorted when it turned out that my travel insurance, which was one of the features of the American Express Platinum Card, did indeed cover me for the box. But they then argued that I needed a statement from the airline within 48 hours of arrival - something that it wasn’t possible to get in these circumstances. After numerous follow up emails and phone calls, I got a cheque for the full value of the damaged box, but only under the proviso that it “would not set a precedent for future claims.”

By then, I had already lost all faith in American Express’ customer service and cancelled my card. I have not even considered taking my bike on a plane since.

Maybe next time I have a travel related problem with an airline, I will be abke to make a bit more noise, knowing there is a much greater chance of being listened to - unless, as I said in my last article, I happen to be flying at Michael O’Leary’s pleasure!

Coventry Airport flights expansion refused - what went wrong?

A couple of years back, I devoted a huge amount of time to defending Coventry Airport’s plans to launch more flights, and to cater for upto 2 million passengers per year.

Despite attempts by some of the anti-airport campaigners to suggest that I was doing this because I had commercial interests to protect, my reasons for getting involved boiled down to a simple belief that the airport’s plans were reasonable and moderate, and that they should be given full support.

It just happens to be that Flightmapping.com is based in Coventry, and that much of the opposition to the airport’s expansion plans was eminating from within the chattering classes of Warwick District, within which I had lived for many years. I have to give it to Warwick District Council, they are a tough bunch - much as though I completely disagree with the stance they have taken, their viewpoint has been vindicated - at least for now.

How different it might have been if the airport was in the boundaries of Coventry? I also can’t help wondering if the decision would have been the same, had TUI still maintained ownershop of the lease on the Coventry Airport site.

At some stage in the not to distant future, I will need to thoroughly digest the report, but I am still sensing that the grounds for refusal ultimately boil down to the presence of Birmingham Airport, rather than the inherent strength of local opposition. I expect that this is a combination of the pre-existence of Birmingham (for mainstream passenger purposes), the public transport provision that Birmingham offers, and its inherent political clout, rather than any individual reason - or grand conspiracy, as some commentators might suggest. I’ll leave the conspiracy theories to the government’s White Paper proposals to build a new airport near Rugby - an obvious political hoax if ever there was one!

Despite the obvious blow that the airport operators have just been dealt, this is far from over - there are appeals, and possible alternative submissions to think about. Meanwhile, the current terminal continues to operate, and to do so with planning permission.

I hope that the key political voices in Coventry will make their opinions known in the right places - shame on Jim Cunningham for caving in to the nimby arguments.

If a local shop of 70 years’ standing was refused planning permission to open a second checkout desk, on the grounds that there was a large supermarket with 12 desks, and plans to expand to 36 desks, just 120 yards away, there would be total outrage, and cries of bullying on the part of said supermarket. Yet shops also cause disturbances, albeit on a different scale. And don’t get me started on the nuisance going on outside a certain local pub last night!

I hope that people will sense a similar outrage over what has happened here, and that they will see through the political points scoring which is so easy to do these days in the name of the environment, when it is perfectly clear that there are other, far greater, vested interests at play.
